Temperature is considered the central control instrument for the growth and flowering of an amaryllis. As a subtropical bulb plant, a knight's star thrives according to a reverse vegetation cycle, focused on a sunny, rainy flowering and growth phase, followed by a dark dormant period. You can read which temperature is mandatory here.
What temperatures does an amaryllis prefer?
The ideal temperature for an amaryllis varies depending on the phase: 18-22 degrees Celsius during the winter flowering period (December-February), 20-28 degrees Celsius in the summer growing season (March-August) and 5-9 degrees Celsius in the autumnal rest period (September-November).
This temperature level suits the Ritterstern
In order to get the optimum out of a hippeastrum, the thermometer should be in view at the respective location. An amaryllis wants these temperatures:
- During the winter flowering period (usually from December to February): 18 to 22 degrees Celsius
- During the summer growing season (usually from March to August): normal summer temperatures, preferably 20 to 28 degrees Celsius
- During the autumn rest period (usually from September to November): 5 to 9 degrees Celsius
Please remember that a knight's star is not hardy. If the mercury falls below 5 degrees Celsius, in the worst case scenario you will be deprived of the magnificent winter blossoms.
