When it's freezing and snowing outside, white amaryllis add wintry accents to the windowsill. We have put together a selection of the most beautiful floral ice queens for you here. Practical care tips for the white-flowering knight's star show how cultivation can be successful over several years.
How do I best care for white amaryllis?
White amaryllis varieties such as Alfresco, Ampute, Antarctica and Jewel are perfect for winter decorations. To cultivate them for several years, only water when flower stalks sprout, water primarily from below, fertilize regularly and let them rest in autumn.
Fairytale Amaryllis varieties in bright white
In the pot or as a cut flower in the vase, white amaryllis impress with their flawless appearance and contrast wonderfully with decorative foliage plants or colorfully flowering conspecifics. The following selection presents you with the most beautiful Ritterstern varieties with single and double white flowers:
- Alfresco delights with lush, double, pure white flowers; Growth height 50-60 cm
- Ampute stands out with simple, elegant funnel flowers; Growth height 30-40 cm
- Antarctica captivates us with the whitest flowers a knight's star has to offer; Growth height 50-60 cm
- Jewel exudes an aromatic scent from its semi-double flowers; Growth height 30-40 cm
The premium variety Marilyn spreads pure romance with slightly ruffled and double flowers. If you are looking for an innovation in white amaryllis, you will find it in the new Garden line. Instead of a single, mighty bulb, many small bulbs grow here, each with a flower stalk and several small, white flowers.
Useful care tips for white and colored amaryllis
The subtropical Ritterstern is out of the ordinary in many ways. Immigrated from southern Brazil and the Andes in Peru, the onion plant follows a reverse vegetation cycle with a flowering period in winter, a growth phase in summer and a rest period in autumn. With this care you can meet the special cultivation wishes of an amaryllis:
- After planting, only water when flower stems and buds sprout
- Water a knight's star primarily from below by putting the water into the saucer
- When the leaves begin to grow, fertilize liquidly every 14 days until the end of July
- Cut off each wilted flower from the main stem as soon as possible
- Cut the main stem just above the bulb at the end of the flowering period
Please keep this care program until July. This month, gradually reduce the amount of watering water so that the plant is in dry soil from August onwards. In September the Ritterstern moves to a cool, dark room. Now it's time to cut off the curled leaves. In November, ring in the new season by repotting the onion in fresh potting soil.
Tip
A wedding in ice and snow has its own special charm. With a bouquet of white amaryllis, the happy bride is transformed into a fairytale snow queen. Since Ritterstern lasts 14 days or longer as a cut flower, the bridal bouquet in the vase spreads its magical flair far beyond the big day.
