For ground cover plants, the question of the correct planting distance does not only depend on the needs and growth speed of the plants. Since larger areas can produce enormous quantities, it is sometimes also a question of the purchase costs of the young plants.
What planting distance is recommended for Vinca minor?
For the optimal planting distance for Vinca minor, plan 5-8 plants per square meter. With faster growth and faster ground cover, 8-12 plants per square meter can be used. Location factors such as light, soil and moisture influence the speed of growth.
A plant with a strong propagation instinct
The large periwinkle (Vinca major) and small periwinkle (Vinca minor) generally have little tendency to form seeds and only under certain conditions. Nevertheless, propagation is relatively easy, even for laypeople, as cuttings can be easily made or rooted offshoots can be separated from the mother plants. If you have a little patience, around 5 to 8 plants per m2 are sufficient, as Vinca minor will quickly spread across all spaces in a suitable location.
Factors such as the location and the gardener's ideal vision
The growth rate of Vinca minor also depends on the following factors:
- Light conditions
- Soil texture
- Moisturization
- of the exact variety
If you want a closed carpet of plants very quickly, then you can also plant around 8 to 12 young plants per m2.
Tip
In locations that are not very shady, there can sometimes be strong competition from various “weeds”. In this case, you should regularly remove “invaders” between the periwinkle plants during the first few months and cover the soil with seasoned compost as fertilizer.
