Since the evergreen is usually only planted in shady locations due to its care needs, the water requirement is usually limited. Nevertheless, periwinkle can also dry out in certain situations.
When and how should you water the periwinkle?
The evergreen should be additionally watered in extreme drought, in planters, sunny locations, poorly moisture-retaining soil and freshly planted young plants. In winter, well-dosed watering may be necessary during clear frosts.
Water the periwinkle properly in summer
Since the periwinkle protects its own root area from evaporation, it normally does not need to be watered in addition to natural rainfall. However, additional watering should be carried out if:
- the weather is extremely dry for long periods of time
- the periwinkle is cultivated in a planter on the balcony
- it is a relatively sunny location
- the soil cannot retain moisture well
- these are freshly planted young plants
Be careful in winter
Sometimes watering may be necessary even in winter (especially with evergreen plants). This is the case when there is too little moisture supplied to the soil in autumn and there are winter frosts. Then you should water carefully at the beginning of a frost-free period of several days.
Tip
The ground cover Vinca minor is often planted as a green carpet on steep slopes. This is not a problem in itself, but for physical reasons slopes are often very dry. That's why you should ensure that the evergreens are sufficiently watered to ensure he althy plant growth, even on slopes.
