A lush green, he althy lawn is the pride of its owner. A lot of care is necessary to ensure that the green area actually develops as lush green, he althy and durable as desired. Problems can arise, especially in the germination phase after the lawn seeds have been sown, if the seeds do not receive enough moisture. Regular watering is extremely important.
How should you water lawns after sowing?
Lawn seeds should be watered daily after sowing to ensure sufficient moisture for germination. As soon as the stalks are around 10 cm high, you can switch to deep watering once or twice a week to promote he althy root formation.
Lawn seeds need a lot of moisture
So that the lawn is sufficiently supplied with water and germinates evenly, you should prepare the soil thoroughly, provide it with a phosphorus-containing fertilizer (€24.00 on Amazon) and, above all, moisten it thoroughly. The seeds are planted on top and carefully distributed with a garden rake. The moisture should reach a depth of around four to five centimeters, which you can easily check with a finger test. Until the first cut, the soil should remain evenly moist (but not wet!), so that watering may have to be carried out several times a day during dry phases. However, if the soil becomes too dry, the seeds die and are no longer able to germinate - the area would then have to be re-sown.
How to properly water lawn seeds after sowing
Even if the seeds have germinated successfully and the stalks are already sprouting from the ground, still water the lawn every day - unless it rains accordingly. You only change this rhythm to once or twice a week when the stalks have grown about ten centimeters high and have been mowed for the first time. The reason for this is root formation: At the beginning of the lawn's development, the young plants are still dependent on an immediate water supply because the roots do not yet reach deep enough. From the first mowing, however, you have to start “training” your lawn. To do this, gradually move on to a less frequent but more thorough watering interval. In this way, the roots are forced to penetrate deeper into the soil and not just lie below the surface.
Tip
Lawn should, if possible, always be planted in autumn, when the ground is still warm and the autumn rainfall provides the necessary moisture. In spring, on the other hand, it is either too cold or too dry, so you have to make greater efforts to successfully grow your lawn.
