The similarity of the plants cannot be denied, but the indoor bamboo is only very distantly related to the giant bamboo or other varieties. Both belong to the sweet grass family, as do our cereals.
Which types of indoor bamboo are suitable for the apartment?
Among the suitable indoor bamboo species are Pogonatherum paniceum (room bamboo, Seychelles grass), Phyllostachys aurea (golden bamboo), Bambusa multiplex, Pleioblastus chino and Dracaena sanderiana or Dracaena braunii (lucky bamboo). These plants are easy to care for and blend well with home crops.
Under the name indoor bamboo you usually get a Pogonatherum paniceum, which is also called Seychelles grass or bamboo grass. However, you can also cultivate different types of Babus indoors. These include, for example, Marmora multiplex, Phyllostachys aurea or the so-called lucky bamboo.
The Seychelles grass likes it to be particularly warm. It is best to place it in a room with temperatures between 20°C and 25°C. In winter it can be a little cooler, but preferably not below 16 °C. Indoor bamboo also needs a lot of light and high humidity. If you can offer it these conditions, it will be quite easy to care for.
Other bamboo species suitable for indoor keeping
Similar to the indoor bamboo, the lucky bamboo also needs a lot of warmth and is therefore well suited for the apartment. By spraying with lime-free water you can increase the humidity to the level required for these plants. You can cultivate it hydroponically, in soil or in a vase.
The Pleioblastus chino does not grow very large at half a height to a height, but forms plenty of runners. Give it a fairly large pot so that the roots have enough space. If you cut off the runners regularly, you can easily propagate this bamboo. He is welcome to spend the summer outside on the terrace or balcony.
Bamboo suitable for indoor use:
- Pogonatherum paniceum (room bamboo, Seychelles grass), size: 30 to 60 cm, very warm-requiring
- Phyllostachys aurea (golden bamboo), size: approx. 4 m, requires little water
- Bambusa multiplex, size: 2 to 3 m, tolerates a little frost
- Pleioblastus chino, size: 50 to 100 cm, very frost tolerant, forms plenty of runners
- Dracaena sanderiana or Dracaena braunii (lucky bamboo), size up to 1 m, very warm and water-requiring
Tip
Indoor bamboo needs a lot of light and a lot of warmth to thrive. Keep this in mind when choosing a location.
