The Dipladenia Mandevilla can be propagated quite easily using offshoots or cuttings. Although it is perennial, it is unfortunately not hardy. With its decorative flowers, it decorates your balcony or terrace in a special way.

How do I propagate Dipladenia through cuttings?

To propagate Dipladenia cuttings, cut off fresh or slightly woody shoots at an angle, place them in a sterilized substrate made of sand and potting soil, and then keep the cuttings warm and moist. A growing temperature between 24 °C and 27 °C is ideal.

What is the best way to cut offshoots?

First prepare a seed pot by heating a mixture of one part each of sand and potting soil in the oven at 180° for about ten minutes. This will kill any germs that may be present. Pour the cooled mixture into a flower pot without drainage holes.

Take some fresh or slightly woody shoots of the Dipladenia and cut them slightly diagonally. Insert these cuttings into the prepared flower pot. Then pull a transparent film over the pot and secure it so that practically no air from outside reaches the cuttings. The existing moisture is sufficient to sprout new shoots. Place the growing pot in a warm place.

Temperatures of approx. 24 °C to 27 °C are ideal. If you can't reach this in any room, then use an indoor greenhouse (€24.00 on Amazon). It will take around three to four weeks for the cuttings to root. Only then do you remove the film or take the young dipladenias out of the greenhouse. Then wait a few weeks before transplanting into larger pots.

The most important things in brief:

  • cut fresh or slightly woody shoots as offshoots
  • cut the bottom end diagonally
  • insert into substrate sterilized by heating
  • keep warm and moist until after successful rooting
  • ideal growing temperature: 24 °C to 27 °C

Tip

Offshoots of the Dipladenia or Mandevilla can easily be cut and new plants grown from them. Growing young plants may also be an alternative to overwintering old plants.
