The Dipladenia or Mandevilla is definitely a perennial plant and very decorative. But it is not hardy and suffers even at temperatures close to freezing. It is therefore essential to bring it to suitable winter quarters early on.
Is Dipladenia perennial?
The Dipladenia is a perennial but not winter-hardy plant. For successful overwintering, it should be kept in a bright room at temperatures between 8 °C and 15 °C. Before moving to winter quarters, we recommend cutting back the plant.
Where should I plant my Dipladenia?
The Mandevilla is a climbing plant and needs a climbing aid if it is to grow upwards. If it is in the garden bed, it must be dug up again early in the fall and brought into a moderately cool but bright room. It is also very suitable for planting balcony boxes or hanging baskets.
Always give your Dipladenia a bright and warm place, because only in such a location will it feel comfortable and show a lush abundance of flowers. If it doesn't get enough light or water, it won't bloom.
How should my Dipladenia overwinter?
As soon as the temperatures fall below around 8 °C in autumn, bring your Dipladenia to its winter quarters. This should definitely be bright and have temperatures between 8 °C and 15 °C. If the Dipladenia is too warm during the winter, it will not bloom the next summer. Water the plant only a little, but do not let the soil dry out completely.
Before you bring your Mandevilla into its winter quarters, cut the plant back. This means it takes up less space, is easier to transport and easier to maintain. Pruning also contributes to lush flowering. You may be able to encourage a Dipladenia that is lazy to bloom to bloom again. Use the cut shoots as cuttings and multiply your Dipladenia.
