Around the Mediterranean, wild oleanders are not uncommon, especially in moist and regularly flooded river floodplains. The lushly growing shrubs with their rich flowers are wonderful to look at, which is why they are often cultivated in this country - although usually in pots, because oleanders are not reliably hardy. In addition to the beautiful flowers in many colors, the flowering shrub also impresses with its very long flowering period.
When is the oleander blooming time?
The flowering period of the oleander extends from early summer to autumn, usually between June and September. Sufficient nutrients, plenty of water and a warm, sunny location are crucial for lush flowers. Withered shoots should not be cut off.
Oleander blooms until autumn
The oleander blooms tirelessly from early summer to autumn. Its mostly red, white, pink or yellow flowers appear between June and September; The better the oleander is cared for, the more lush it becomes. As a heavy feeder, the plant needs a lot of nutrients, especially during the flowering period, and should therefore be supplied with a good flowering plant fertilizer (€19.00 on Amazon) once or twice a week. A sufficient supply of water is also important for abundant flowering, because the oleander needs a lot of the precious water.
Don't cut off the faded flowers
Although it makes sense to remove spent shoots from many flowering plants and thus stimulate the formation of new flowers, this is not the case with oleander. Here the plants of the upcoming new flowers are located at the top of the old, worn-out ones - which is why you would be depriving yourself of new flowers if you cut away what has faded. Instead, it is better to leave the old flowers on the bush, they will dry up after a while and fall off on their own.
Tip
If the oleander doesn't want to bloom, it could be due to the location: Oleanders like it warm, sunny and protected from the wind. If it is too cold for them, the flowers will fail. After clearing out the winter quarters, stimulate flowering by watering the oleander with lukewarm water.
