When and how should you sow Pak Choi?

Pak Choi can be grown from April on the windowsill in growing bowls or egg cartons with vegetable or growing soil. Sow the seeds 5mm to 1cm deep and keep the soil moist. Direct sowing outdoors is possible from mid-May.

Sowing Pak Choi

You can sow Pak Choi at the beginning of April. All you need is the seeds, vegetable or growing soil and a growing bowl. Alternatively, you can also use egg cartons for cultivation.

Fill the bowls with soil and place the Pak Choi seeds 5mm to 1cm deep into the soil. Press the substrate lightly and water it so that it is moist but not floating in water. Then place your bowls in a warm, bright place. 16 to 18 degrees are ideal for germination.

Pak Choi sprouting

Pak Choi can germinate after just two days. You should be able to see the small seedlings after a week at the latest. Especially during this phase, make sure that the substrate never dries out.

Pricking Pak Choi

Once the plants have reached a height of around five centimeters, you should prick them out. Of course, this is only necessary if you have sown several seeds in a small bowl. So that the plants do not prevent each other from growing, carefully separate the individual plants from each other. Proceed as follows:

  • Use an oblong object, e.g. a blunt knife or a stick, to loosen the soil around the plants a little.
  • Then gently pull on the plants you want to remove.
  • Use the knife to further loosen the soil and pull the plants out of the container so that you do not injure the delicate roots.
  • Then place the plants in a new planter so that they all have enough space to grow.

Planting bok choi

After the Ice Saints you can plant your Pak Choi outdoors. If you have a lot of snails in the garden, it makes sense to put up snail fences or rings, because snails like bok choy at least as much as you do. When planting, maintain a planting distance of at least 25cm from one plant to the next.

Tip

Alternatively, you can also sow your Pak Choi directly outdoors, but only from mid-May.
