The betel palm is one of the most popular houseplants because of its broad, extremely attractive leaves. However, it is not considered easy because, in addition to the right location, it needs consistent and good care for he althy growth.
How do I properly care for a betel palm?
In order to properly care for the betel palm, it needs a lot of water, lime-free water at room temperature, a bright location and regular fertilization. Repotting should only be done every 3-4 years. Cutting is rarely necessary, but pests and diseases may occur.
Water requirements
The betel palm is a very thirsty plant that needs a lot of water. It is extremely sensitive to dryness. Always keep the soil moist. In contrast to many types of palm trees, a wet root ball doesn't bother you much, provided a drainage layer made of expanded clay or other suitable materials ensures moisture regulation. Always water with room temperature, lime-free water.
How to fertilize?
During the summer months, fertilization is carried out every 14 days with a special palm fertilizer (€8.00 on Amazon), in the concentration recommended by the manufacturer.
When does it need to be repotted?
This palm tolerates frequent repotting very poorly. Therefore, only put them in a new container every three to four years. Pay attention to the following points when carrying out this care measure:
- Repotting is always done in spring.
- Very carefully lift it out of the old pot.
- To protect the delicate foliage, only grab the lower part of the trunk.
How to cut?
As a rule, the betel palm does not need to be shortened as it only grows slowly and rather broadly in the room. You may only remove completely dried fronds close to the trunk.
What pests and diseases are threatening?
The betel palm reacts extremely sensitively to care errors. Brown leaf tips indicate that the air is too dry, so spray the plant daily. If the irrigation water contains too much lime, the foliage will become spotty.
Mealybugs and scale insects are common in the cold season. If the infestation is light, carefully remove the pest insects with a sharp knife or cotton ball. For more severe infestations, treatment with a suitable insecticide is usually the only solution.
Wintering
The betel palm is very warm-loving and must be overwintered indoors at temperatures of around twenty degrees.
Tip
Betel palms are ideal plants for warm, humid rooms or the winter garden, where other plants and regular moistening ensure sufficient humidity. Here they develop into their full glory and can reach heights of up to two meters. However, fruits like those found in their natural habitat are rarely to be expected here.
