Oleander should overwinter - at least at temperatures below minus five degrees Celsius - in a frost-protected but cool and bright room. If possible, you should not leave the potted plant indoors all winter long, but only when absolutely necessary - for example in harsh winters. The Mediterranean ornamental shrub simply feels most comfortable outside.
How do I care for oleander after winter?
After winter, oleanders should be carefully cut back, checked, fertilized and slowly acclimated to the sun. Sheltered, shady places and possible protection from night frosts are important for he althy growth.
Do not abruptly remove oleander from its winter quarters
However, if the oleander has spent several weeks or even months in its winter quarters, you should pay attention to a few important tips - otherwise the very sensitive plant could react with shock. This includes, for example, that oleanders should be allowed back outdoors as early as possible - but not oleanders that have overwintered at temperatures of more than ten degrees Celsius. Oleanders that have been overwintered too warm continue to grow in the cold season, so that the new shoots are not cold-resistant and would simply die. Cold-overwintered specimens, on the other hand, are significantly more robust.
From the winter quarters first into the shade
In addition, oleanders do not belong in full sun from their winter quarters: this abrupt change leads to severe leaf damage and can have a lasting negative impact on both the growth and flowering of the plant. It is better to initially place the bucket in a protected and shady place. Getting used to the sun occurs gradually and carefully, so that the change shock for the oleander is not quite as drastic.

Prune oleander carefully
First of all, this includes careful, caring pruning. However, you only remove dead, diseased and weak shoots in order to strengthen the rest in this way. Also check the shrub carefully for any diseases (dry rot in particular often occurs after overwintering) and possible pest infestation.
Starting fertilization for a flower-rich season
In addition, clearing out the winter quarters also means the first fertilization - so that your oleander starts the new growing season stronger.
