The amaryllis, also known as knight's star, is an exotic beauty and delights us with its colorful flowers in the dark season. Did you know that you don't have to throw away the amaryllis after it blooms? In fact, the bulb flower can bloom every year.
How do I care for the amaryllis after flowering?
After the amaryllis has bloomed, you should cut off dried flower stems, keep the plant bright and warm and water and fertilize it regularly. In summer, it can be moved outdoors and given liquid fertilizer every 14 days to bloom again in the future.
What do you do with the amaryllis after it blooms?
In contrast to our native bulb plants, the amaryllis does not enter a dormant phase after flowering. Instead, the actual growth phase now begins, in which the flower forms long, sword-shaped leaves. This phase begins after the last flowers have dried up - this is usually between February and March. Sometimes the amaryllis also sprouts the first leaves during flowering.
So after flowering you don't have to throw away the plant, you should
- keep it bright and warm
- water and fertilize regularly
- Cut off the faded flowers
How and where do you cut the amaryllis after flowering?
After flowering, simply cut off the dried flower stems of the amaryllis directly where they grow from the bulb. However, do not injure the onion under any circumstances, otherwise pathogens can penetrate and cause it to rot!
Unless you want to use the flower as a cut flower, it is best to wait until the stems have dried before cutting. The same applies to the leaves. The plant extracts the nutrients and stores them in the bulb for a later flowering phase.
How do you care for the faded amaryllis in summer?
As soon as the first leaves begin to grow after flowering, you need to regularly supply the amaryllis with water and nutrients. This ensures that the bulb can gather enough strength for the next flowering phase. In summer you care for the bulb flower as follows:
- If possible, place outside in a sunny, warm place
- ideal temperatures are around 26 degrees Celsius
- water regularly
- Excess irrigation water must be able to drain away
- Avoid waterlogging
- fertilize with liquid fertilizer every 14 days from March to June
Can the amaryllis bloom again in summer?
The amaryllis usually blooms between December and February, during which time several flowers can emerge one after the other. In very rare cases, the bulb flower can actually bloom again in early summer.
A summer bloom usually occurs when you have sent the flower into the dormant phase too early and “awakened” it again. The different phases can be influenced so that the flowering period of the amaryllis can be postponed until the summer months.
Tip
How do I make the amaryllis bloom again?
Stop watering the amaryllis from the end of July / beginning of August. Now the rest phase begins, in which the onion - unpotted and without soil - has to rest in a cool, dark place for six to eight weeks. From mid-October, plant the tuber again so that the flowering can begin again.
