How to care for orchids with new shoots?
To care for orchids when they have new shoots, they should be placed in a bright, warm location with high humidity. Dip regularly with soft, room temperature water, fertilize every 4 weeks, spray leaves and aerial roots daily and do not cut off dead shoots too quickly.
Light and warmth stimulate growth
During the rest period, orchids tolerate slightly cooler temperatures. This tolerance is over when new shoots appear. Now at the latest, the royal flower wants to stay in a bright, warm location with 20 to 25 degrees Celsius. A high humidity of more than 60 percent is now also an advantage.
Care for new shoots – that’s what matters
Parallel to the growth of new shoots, the need for water and nutrients increases. How to properly care for an orchid now:
- Once or twice a week, immerse yourself in soft, room temperature water
- Fertilize liquidly every 4 weeks until the end of the flowering and growing period
- Spray leaves and aerial roots daily
Now is the best time to repot your orchid. If numerous aerial roots protrude beyond the edge of the pot or grow out of the opening in the ground, the plant wants to be moved to a larger container with fresh orchid soil (€7.00 at Amazon). Do not cut off dead shoots too quickly
The popular Phalaenopsis orchids do not take a significant break from blooming. As soon as the last flowers have withered, the new shoots are already appearing. Please do not be tempted to cut off the dead stems. With a little luck and proper care, the stems will give you side shoots that will bud and bloom within a short period of time. The part of the stem above the new shoot dries up and can be cut off until it branches.
Tip
To ensure that your orchids continue to produce new shoots in the future, leaf care must not be neglected. Periodically wipe away dust and other debris with a soft, damp cloth. For a beautiful shine, gently polish the foliage with the inside of a banana.
