You don't need any gardening skills to grow an ivy fence yourself or to add greenery to walls. All you need to do is provide a trellis or a wire fence. Plant a few ivy plants and simply let the shoots climb. Within a few years, the climbing plant covers fences, walls and house facades.

How do you let ivy climb and grow?

To grow ivy, you need a trellis such as a wall, house facade or a wooden or wire fence. The ivy's adhesive roots anchor themselves in the subsoil and thus climb upwards. Regular pruning helps control growth.

Just let ivy grow

In order for ivy to grow as a climbing plant, you need a trellis. This can be a wall, a house facade, a wooden fence or even a chain link fence.

It is important that the subsoil offers the roots an opportunity to anchor themselves in it. In the case of house walls, these are usually the joints. Wood is ideal because the ivy roots can dig in particularly well here.

If you want to green a chain link fence with ivy, you can't just let the first shoots climb. They find no hold in the material and therefore do not form adhesive roots. Carefully loop the shoots through the individual stitches. Later the tendrils find support in the already growing ivy shoots.

Pulling ivy as a ground cover

Even if you want to grow ivy on the ground as a ground cover, you don't have to do much. After planting, simply let the shoots climb.

The shoots on the ground form adhesive roots with which they anchor themselves in the soil. Over time, the roots deepen so that new offshoots sprout. You can simply dig these up and multiply the ivy.

Prune ivy regularly

To prevent the ivy from spreading too much, you should cut it back regularly. Otherwise, ivy will grow like a weed and eventually cover the entire garden.

When adding greenery to house walls, it is also advisable to occasionally use scissors. Thick clumps of shoots often form, the roots of which no longer have enough support. In strong storms it can happen that part of the ivy falls down.

Tip

Removing ivy from a house wall is not that easy. The roots can penetrate into joints and cause damage if you remove them. A wall covered in ivy cannot be uncovered without leaving any residue.
