Most gardeners know that ivy is a climbing plant that grows in height or width primarily via climbing tendrils. Very few people know that ivy also spreads through the roots. Root depth plays a particularly important role when you want to remove ivy from the garden.
How deep are the roots of ivy?
The rooting depth of ivy varies depending on the age and location of the plant. Young plants have rather shallow roots, while older ivy plants can develop roots up to a depth of 30-60 centimeters. If damage occurs on walls or walls, ivy roots can even penetrate the masonry.
How deep does ivy root in the ground?
The rooting depth of ivy depends on the age and location of the plant. Young plants form a root system that is only a few centimeters deep - provided the soil is sufficiently moist.
The longer ivy grows in the location, the deeper the roots reach. Depending on the age, the root depth is 30 to 40 centimeters. If the soil is rather dry, the roots dig deeper into the earth. They can also be found at a depth of 60 centimeters and more.
Root depth of ivy on walls and walls
Ivy climbs walls and walls using its roots. If the wall is completely intact and has a slightly porous surface, there is no risk of the ivy forming roots that penetrate the wall.
However, if the tendrils find places where the facade is damaged, the ivy develops roots that penetrate the masonry. Depending on their nature, they can be several centimeters deep and blow up entire walls.
In such a case, the wall can no longer be saved. Before you grow ivy on masonry, you should ensure that all damage is removed first. You also need to cut back ivy before it reaches window openings or roofs.
How deep do you have to dig to remove ivy?
If you want to permanently remove ivy from the garden, all you have to do is get the roots out of the ground as completely as possible.
Depending on the age, you will need to dig up the soil up to 60 centimeters or to the depth of the foundation to get all the ivy roots.
Tip
To really permanently remove ivy, chemical agents or gas burners do not help. Because of the depth of the roots, ivy remedies do not reach the roots. Even burning does not destroy the roots.
