Occasionally drops that look like water appear on the tips of the leaves of the ivy plant. Sometimes the plant appears to be literally crying, causing moisture to drip onto the windowsill or floor. Why do the leaves drip and how dangerous is it for the plant?
Why is my ivy dripping and how do I prevent it?
If the ivy is dripping, incorrect watering is the cause. The plant releases excess water through leaf gaps and regulates its water balance. Prevent dripping by watering moderately, regularly and removing excess water in the saucer.
The ivy is dripping – causes of the drips
If an ivy plant drips even though you haven't sprayed it with water, incorrect watering is always to blame.
If the substrate is too moist, the ivy will absorb too much water. It releases the excess water through the leaf gaps - it drips! It regulates its water balance independently.
Dripping is harmless to the plant
If the ivy drips, it is not initially dangerous for the plant, but rather a completely normal process.
It looks different for people and animals in the house. Even though the drops look like water, they are not water drops. The liquid contains toxins that must under no circumstances enter the human or animal organism.
Therefore, ensure that the ivy plant is placed in such a way that any drops that may fall do not reach the floor or other places that are accessible to children or pets.
How to prevent the ivy from dripping
- Water moderately but regularly
- Never let the root ball dry out completely
- pour excess water away immediately
You should prevent the ivy from dripping not only because of the toxicity of the liquid. It is also slightly sticky and will settle on floors, carpets or window sills.
In addition, the ivy plant will not thrive in the long term if it is kept too moist. It never wants to dry out completely, but it also doesn't tolerate waterlogging.
Water ivy plants moderately but regularly. Only when the top layer of soil has dried should you give it low-lime water. If possible, pour off any excess water that collects in the saucer immediately. Alternatively, water an ivy plant from below by filling the saucer with water several times while the soil is still absorbing liquid.
Tip
Ivy plants like high humidity. You should therefore occasionally spray the leaves with water, especially in winter. This will clean them of dust at the same time.
