The Märzenbecher is becoming increasingly rare in nature. But at home, any nature lover can use it to create a white carpet of flowers. Bury a few onions in the ground and let time work its magic. Nothing else to do. We'll tell you everything you need to know about planting it.
When and how should you plant March cups?
March cups should be planted in early autumn, ideally in September or October, in partially shaded to shady locations. Dig a 10 cm deep planting hole for each onion, insert the onion and fill the gaps with the excavated material. Make sure there is a minimum distance of 10 cm between the planting holes.
The planting material
Onions for your own home garden must only come from stores. You can also get a few daughter bulbs from other gardeners. The great outdoors, on the other hand, may not be used for this purpose.
Wild-growing Märzenbecher are protected in this country. It is forbidden to pick their flowers. Let alone digging up the onion for home. Heavy fines are imposed for violations of the legal provisions.
Tip
In the garden, you can always check after the flowering period to see whether small brood bulbs have formed on the mother bulbs. This way you can easily multiply the Märzenbecher. Separate the daughter bulbs and replant them in the desired location.
The best planting time for Märzenbecher
New March cup bulbs should ideally enter your garden in autumn. They still have enough time to adapt to their new surroundings. In spring they can provide the fresh shoots and flowers with water and nutrients.
- Planting onions in early fall
- on a non-frosty day
- the months of September and October are ideal
- Transplanting daughter bulbs after flowering
Finding a suitable location
For the Märzenbecher, look for a spot in your garden that offers similar conditions to its natural distribution areas. In this country these are the floodplain forests.
- choose semi-shady to shady locations
- for example below trees and large bushes
- the soil should be as freshly moist as possible
- the proximity to a garden pond is ideal
Planting bulbs
The bulbs should be planted immediately after purchasing them, as they react sensitively when stored for a long time. Here's how to do it step by step:
- Completely clear the designated area of weeds.
- Loose up the soil and work in some compost (€43.00 at Amazon). Then the spring knot flowers, as March cups are also called, are well supplied with nutrients for the following years.
- Dig a planting hole about 10 cm deep for each bulb. There should also be a minimum distance of 10 cm between two planting holes. These onions will later grow so-called daughter onions. With closer planting, things could soon become tight.
- Insert the bulbs and fill the gaps with the excavated material.
- You can decorate the planting site with leaves or similar. Cover. This layer keeps some of the winter cold as well as the ground moist.
Tip
The Märzenbecher is poisonous in all parts. Wear protective gloves when planting.
