Roses are among the most popular ornamental plants, no wonder, because their beautiful flowers are second to none. At the same time, however, the flower is considered quite demanding when it comes to care and location. At least with regard to the real earth, this statement is not entirely correct.
Which soil is suitable for roses?
Roses prefer nutrient-rich, humus-rich and well-drained soil, preferably loamy soil. Special rose soil is not absolutely necessary. For potted roses you can make a mixture of garden soil, compost and potting soil. Garden soil can be improved with humus substances.
Special rose soil not absolutely necessary
You can buy special rose soil in stores whose composition and nutrient content are perfectly tailored to the needs of the “Queen of Flowers”. However, it is not absolutely necessary to buy this special soil. For potted roses, you can make a suitable mixture yourself from normal garden soil, compost and potting soil (equal parts of each) (don't forget about drainage!). Garden roses grow best in nutrient-rich, humus-rich and well-drained soil. Most roses prefer loamy soil.
Prepare soil thoroughly before planting
However, the best soil is of no use to the rose if it has not been dug up vigorously and loosened before planting. You should work as deeply as possible, because as deep-rooted roses need loose soil even deep down.
Tip
You can also improve garden soil (especially if it is sandy) with compost or other humus substances before planting.
