Is moss poisonous to people and animals?
Moss is not poisonous to humans or animals because it does not contain any poisons or toxins. However, moss should still not be consumed because it can absorb pollutants and exhaust gases that can be harmful if consumed.
Moos relies on tactics – instead of poison
As a small, green and rootless land plant, moss is one of the inconspicuous representatives of Mother Nature's kingdom. Nevertheless, moss species have successfully asserted themselves in silent battles against predators for almost 400 million years. The survival artists do without both mechanical weapons, such as thorns, and toxins. Rather, mosses have developed effective deterrents - for example with oxylipins - so that snails and other predators lose their appetite.
Consumption is not recommended
Although moss is not poisonous, it should not be consumed. Through its large cushions, the plant absorbs exhaust gases and other pollutants that enter the organism via this route.
