Whether a moss rose needs to be cut every year or just every few years depends on the species. Varieties that bloom twice need to be cut more often than moss roses that only bloom once. When and how to cut moss roses correctly.
How often and when should moss roses be cut?
Moss roses that bloom once should be pruned every two to three years, while twice-blooming varieties need to be pruned annually. The best time for cutting is in spring. Cut dried, diseased, frozen or weak shoots and ensure that the shoots are arranged in an airy manner.
The best time to cut moss roses
Like all roses, moss roses are generally only cut in early spring. In doing so, remove all shoots that
- dried up
- sick
- frozen
- weak
appear.
You should also thin out moss roses so that the individual shoots are as airy as possible. It is important that you leave enough older shoots standing, as moss roses only bloom on old wood.
Cutting moss roses correctly
Always cut the branches just above an outward-facing eye. The cut should be made at a slight angle to allow rainwater to drain away. Otherwise the moisture will penetrate into the interfaces and lead to rot.
When cutting moss roses, only use sharp rose scissors (€25.00 on Amazon) so that the cuts do not fray.
Cutting moss roses once they bloom
Treat moss roses that only bloom once like wild roses. They are not cut annually, but only every two to three years.
When cutting, make sure that an approximately equal number of old shoots, previous year's shoots and new shoots are retained on the bush.
Cutting twice-blooming moss rose
You cut these varieties every year. The shoots are shortened to a third.
After the first flowering, you should cut off spent inflorescences as soon as possible. This will prevent ovaries from developing, which would unnecessarily rob the plant of strength. You will also stimulate a strong second flowering period.
After the second flowering, leave the flowers so that rose hips can form. These are popular with birds, but can also be used in the kitchen.
Rejuvenate moss roses
Very old moss roses that are completely out of shape should be rejuvenated every three to five years. All very old shoots are cut out. The moss rose blooms a little less the following year.
Tip
Moss roses are easy to care for, but are somewhat susceptible to mildew. Always water these roses from below so that you wet the leaves as little as possible. The best time for watering is in the morning.
