It's not for nothing that the dragon tree is visually reminiscent of various types of palm trees, as this exotic species generally likes it to be relatively warm all year round. Since dragon trees react very sensitively to frosty temperatures, they are mostly cultivated purely as houseplants.
Is the dragon tree hardy?
Are dragon trees hardy? No, dragon trees are not hardy as they prefer warm temperatures of 18 to 24 degrees Celsius. Most species show signs of discomfort at temperatures below 15 degrees Celsius. Therefore, they should be cultivated as houseplants and protected from frost.
Dragon trees feel comfortable in warm temperatures all year round
Most species of dragon tree appreciate consistently warm temperatures of around 18 to 24 degrees Celsius all year round. If the plants also have their roots in suitable soil, enjoy high humidity and are repotted regularly, this optimal care sometimes even bears fruit in the form of the rather rare dragon tree blossom. However, there shouldn't be too much of a good thing when it comes to sunlight and warmth: the window sill above the heater is not suitable as a location due to the severe drying out even with regular watering and, in the case of south-facing windows, due to the risk of sunburn on the leaves of the plants.
Some exceptions confirm the rule
While most dragon trees can show the first signs of failure and let their leaves droop at temperatures below 15 degrees Celsius, the Canary Islands dragon tree (Dracaena draco) can also tolerate temperatures of around 10 degrees Celsius during its winter rest. There are also dragon trees that can survive even colder temperatures unscathed in exceptional situations. However, these are specimens that, due to their biblical age, have a particularly thick trunk and are therefore less sensitive to temperature fluctuations.
The balcony is only suitable as a seasonal location for the dragon tree
In summer, a balcony that is not too hot can serve as a location for one or more dragon trees. However, you should pay attention to the following things:
- some protection from drafts
- regularly spraying the leaves with water (to compensate for low humidity)
- moving into the house on time in late summer (beware of cool autumn nights)
Tip
In the room, if there is a certain distance from the next window, the dragon tree can grow very one-sided. Since it always wants to stretch towards the sunlight, you can ensure even and compact growth by rotating the plants regularly about every 14 days.
