The dragon tree is one of the fairly easy-care houseplants and can grow quite impressively even in the house if it is repotted regularly. This plant feels really comfortable when temperatures stay as warm as possible all year round.

How do you properly overwinter a dragon tree?

To overwinter a dragon tree successfully, it should be placed in a bright but not directly sunny place, not exposed to temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius, watered less and not fertilized during the winter months.

The dragon tree likes it sunny and warm even in winter

Due to the natural area of origin of most subspecies, the dragon tree is highly sensitive to cold temperatures. Even in winter, dragon trees should be kept as bright as possible (although not directly in the sunlight at the window) and should not be exposed to temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius. Certain dragon trees even let their leaves droop at cooler temperatures below 16 degrees Celsius.

Adapt the care measures to the hibernation of the dragon tree

During the so-called hibernation period from around November to March, the following care measures and location factors should be adjusted accordingly:

  • Fertilization
  • Water supply
  • Light

You should not fertilize the dragon tree at all during the winter months and should only be watered as soon as the top layer of soil feels crumbly and dry again. Lots of daylight generally has a positive effect, but too much direct sunlight can also damage the leaves.

Tip

The dragon tree thrives very well on the balcony during the summer months, but it has to be saved into the house in good time in autumn before cold weather phases.
