Frankincense plants come from India. They are not hardy, but on the contrary are very sensitive to frost. They are usually only grown as annuals, as for many gardeners it is not worth overwintering them. In principle, it is possible to grow an incense plant for several years.
How to overwinter an incense plant?
In order to successfully overwinter an incense plant, it should be brought indoors in October at the latest, cut back and placed in a bright, frost-free place at 10 to 12 degrees Celsius. During the winter break, water sparingly and do not fertilize.
Frankincense plants are very sensitive to frost
The frankincense plant cannot tolerate sub-zero temperatures at all. Even ten degrees is actually too cold for her. If you want to care for frankincense plants for several years, you must overwinter them in a frost-free place in the house.
How to properly overwinter an incense plant
You should bring an incense plant into your winter quarters by October at the latest. You can cut it back beforehand so that it doesn't take up so much space. The ideal temperatures for wintering are ten to twelve degrees.
Do not place the plants too dark. During the winter, the frankincense plant is watered very sparingly so that the root ball does not dry out completely. There is no fertilization at all in winter.
Care after the winter break
From March you can take the frankincense plant out of its winter quarters. Slowly acclimate them to more light and warmth. Do not put the plants back on the balcony straight away and especially not in direct sun.
Replace the old plant substrate to ensure the supply of nutrients. You should repot hanging basket plants in spring. You must not fertilize repotted frankincense plants in the first few weeks.
Do not water too heavily or too frequently at the beginning. The frankincense plant first has to get used to larger waterings again.
Tip
Frankincense plants are not very demanding when it comes to the substrate. Normal potting soil (€10.00 on Amazon) is sufficient. If you use garden soil, you should mix in some mature compost.
