One of the most important questions in connection with the orientation of the greenhouse, in addition to the type of later planting, is finding a place where the light and heat output is appropriately high. In addition, the location must fit harmoniously into the rest of the property.
What orientation is ideal for a greenhouse?
The optimal greenhouse orientation depends on the planned planting: a north-south orientation is recommended for summer cultivation of vegetables and flowers, while an east-west orientation is more suitable for spring cultivation. It is important to ensure sufficient sunlight for the plants.
When planning a new greenhouse for your home garden, the decision depends on many factors. How big should or should it be, should it be built by yourself or bought ready-made, what is the financial budget andwhich plants should be installed? Equally important: does the building actually fit into the existing garden structure as well as the property as a whole and can the greenhouse be aligned in such a way that optimal growth conditions are available for the plants?
Light, warmth, sun – everything has to be right
A stand location and the optimal orientation for your later planting must be chosen particularly carefully, because major corrections can only be implemented after construction with very high construction effort. So, there has to be sun andat least six to seven hours a day if the house is otherwise on a reasonably bright spot. Ten hours is even better, which is particularly advantageous for cold frame planting. When the sun is low in winter, a greenhouse must not be shaded by nearby wooden fences, shed walls or hedges. Otherwise it stays cool, dark inside and is relatively quickly attacked by layers of green algae.
The type of planting determines the orientation
Whether a greenhouse is oriented with the front from north to south (summer cultivation of vegetables and flowers) or from east to west (growing in early spring) depends primarily on which plants are to be grown and whether the ordered area should be usedall year round or just for spring planting.
Geometry and greenhouse alignment
Greenhouses with many corners may look stylish, but they have one major disadvantage: they are more difficult to ventilate and planting is also a little more complicated than with their square counterparts. As a result, the orientation of a square greenhouse in a central location is almost unimportant, since the receiving area for the light in this case is almost identical in size. A north - south orientation would be recommended for long houses, as the broad side can absorb a lot of sunlight and pass it on to the plants.
Tip
Already with the geometric alignment of the foundation, which should be laid as level as possible, you will be on the dry side later if a slight slope is planned for trouble-free rainwater drainage from the roof and side walls towards the greenhouse entrance.
