Of course you would like to enjoy your garden pond in spring with the first warm rays of sunshine - and so you often start construction early. This article explains why this can be problematic.
When is the best temperature for laying pond liner?
Laying pond liner should ideally be done when outside temperatures are high in summer, as PVC films are then softer, easier to handle and less susceptible to tearing. However, EPDM foils can also be laid at lower temperatures because they are more flexible.
Wrinkle-free laying
Films must adapt perfectly to the pond substrate. This is the only way to ensure a long service life of the film.
PVC films become brittle at lower temperatures and are difficult to lay. Films are therefore best laid when outside temperatures are high in summer. This has some advantages:
- the film becomes soft and adapts more easily to the surface
- The risk of tearing when laying is not that great
- the film is much easier and more precise to lay
You don't have this problem with EPDM films. They are still very flexible even at low temperatures and you hardly feel any restrictions.
Tip
Use enough helpers to lay the film. This helps you avoid harmful tensile stresses on the film. Once the liner is installed, fill the pond a third full with water and leave it like that for a day. Pour gravel on terraces. This means the film adapts perfectly to the surface.
