If the roof, side walls or floor of the garden house is leaking, this is extremely annoying. The resulting musty smell not only affects the comfort. If you use the arbor as a storage room, garden tools and furniture can become damaged and unusable.
How can I effectively seal my garden shed?
To seal a garden house, you should repair roofing felt or asph alt shingles, place a moisture barrier under the floor slab, use weather-resistant softwoods and seal leaks on the walls with wood filler. Regular painting also protects against moisture.
Tips to detect and avoid leaks early on
- Empty out the garden house once a year, clean it and check for leaks.
- A moisture barrier needs to be placed under the floor slab.
- When building, pay attention to weather-resistant softwoods.
Sealing the roof
Roofing felt and asph alt shingles are relatively robust, but still weather over time. Then it is not necessarily necessary to replace the roof, you can also repair this yourself inexpensively:
- Seal any small damage with bitumen compound (€30.00 on Amazon).
- Treat larger areas or the entire roof with a special sealant.
- For very large roofs, you can alternatively lay bitumen welding sheets and thus completely cover the defective roof covering.
Seal the floor afterwards
If you forgot to lay foil under the concrete when pouring the base plate, the base area will draw water from below. Specialist retailers offer special floor sealing products to combat oppressive moisture, which are also used in basements. It is usually possible to seal the floor with these.
If it is not possible to seal the panel with additional sealing from above, the only option is to dismantle the garden house again. Remove the old floor slab and build a new substructure.
Leaks on the walls
You can recognize these by discoloration or streaks that indicate mold or dripping water. Cracks in the walls are sealed with wood filler both from the outside and from the inside.
Tip
Repaint the garden house at regular intervals. Take a close look at the arbor in advance and repair any damaged areas straight away.
