If your succulents refuse to produce the flowers they longed for, the houseplants are missing out on winter rest. Only a species-appropriate overwintering prepares the exotic pieces of jewelry for a lavish abundance of flowers in the coming season. Find out how to do it right this year here.
How should succulents be overwintered in the winter?
To overwinter succulents successfully, you should place them in a bright, cooler place from November to February, with a temperature around 5 degrees Celsius lower. During this time, water sparingly and do not fertilize.
Dry coolness is the secret recipe for the winter time
Succulents come from regions of the world where rain is scarce, even during the winter. In order to overwinter the exotic life artists properly and at the same time motivate them to induce flowers, a combination of dryness and a reduction in temperature is important. This is how it works:
- From November to February, move succulent plants to a bright, cooler location
- Ideally place at a temperature 5 degrees Celsius lower
- Just water every now and then during the winter so that the substrate doesn't dry out
- Do not fertilize from the end of October to the beginning of March
You can water large succulents thoroughly for the last time at the beginning of November. Under normal conditions, this water supply lasts until February. Water small succulents little by little as long as the substrate is well dried. To protect against dry heating air, spray the leaves regularly with lime-free water.
For winter-flowering succulents, the resting phase is the opposite. Poinsettias, for example, begin their dormancy in spring. If the houseplants experience a drop in temperature to 14 to 15 degrees Celsius for 4 to 6 weeks during this time, combined with a reduced water supply, they will put on their flower dress again in time for the next Christmas.
Tip
In order for hardy succulents to overwinter outside, they need protection from moisture. Even a simple superstructure made of 4 posts and a translucent Plexiglas roof protects cacti and other succulent plants from death due to the cold. Furthermore, stop watering completely from November to February.
