How do you care for succulents in a pot?
For successful care of potted succulents, they should be potted in permeable succulent soil with drainage and positioned in a sunny location. Water regularly when the substrate dries and fertilize every 3 to 4 weeks during the growing season. Reduce watering and fertilization in winter.
Potting succulents correctly – this is what you should pay attention to
Waterlogging is the biggest nightmare for your succulents. A pot with drainage in the bottom and expanded clay drainage effectively prevents this problem. A well-drained succulent soil made from humus and mineral components also makes a valuable contribution to vital growth. Since purchased plants are often in unsuitable potting soil, ideally you repot a new succulent straight away, while maintaining the previous planting depth.
Care program for succulents in pots – a short guide
Once you have potted your succulents professionally, they can recover from the stress for about a week in a partially shaded location. Then the starting signal is given for one of the most uncomplicated care programs for houseplants. How to properly care for a succulent plant in a pot:
- The ideal location is sunny and warm, preferably on the balcony in summer
- Water regularly during the growth phase when the substrate has noticeably dried out
- Let lime-free water slowly run onto the root disk until it runs out of the bottom opening
- Add succulent fertilizer (€6.00 at Amazon) to the watering water every 3 to 4 weeks from May to September
- Instead of pruning, pluck or twist out dead leaves
From October/November to February/March, succulents in pots go into dormant growth. It is an advantage if the plants can move to a bright location during this time where temperatures are between 12 and 15 degrees Celsius. Please do not apply fertilizer during winter. Water large succulents thoroughly for the last time at the beginning of November. Small succulents occasionally receive a drink of soft water during wintering.
Tip
You should repot your succulents every few years. Once a plant has fully rooted its pot, fresh substrate and a larger container will stimulate growth again. The best time for this care measure is at the end of winter, when new shoots are about to appear.
