The jackfruit is an integral part of Asian cuisine, where it is considered a staple food. The tree can be cultivated well in the winter garden or a heated greenhouse, but you shouldn't expect a rich harvest here.
How do you properly care for a jackfruit plant?
To successfully care for a jackfruit, you need a sunny to partially shaded location, moist, permeable and humus-rich soil, regular watering (without waterlogging) and fertilizing every 7 to 14 days in summer. The plant is particularly suitable as a pot or house plant and should be kept warm over the winter.
Select soil and location
If your jackfruit tree feels comfortable, it can grow up to four meters high. To do this, however, it needs a permeable and humus-rich soil that is always slightly moist but does not tend to become waterlogged.
The jackfruit also prefers a location in full sun or light partial shade. Plant the jackfruit in a large pot and in the summer it can be placed on your balcony or terrace.
Water and fertilize the jackfruit
The jackfruit is quite thirsty and should be watered accordingly frequently. But don't water too much at once, as waterlogging can quickly lead to root rot. High humidity is very beneficial for the jackfruit.
This plant also needs fertilizer regularly in summer, but in small doses. Add a little liquid fertilizer (€6.00 on Amazon) to the irrigation water about every one to two weeks. Rainwater is ideal, alternatively use low-lime tap water.
Growing from seeds
A jackfruit tree is quite easy to grow from seeds. You can get these from specialist retailers or from a ripe jackfruit. Clean the seed thoroughly before placing it in the soil.
The jackfruit in winter
The jackfruit shows ideal growth when it is in the same place all year round. To do this, however, you need a heated greenhouse, a winter garden or a large, bright room where there is a minimum temperature of 15 °C all year round. It can be warmer in summer. In winter the jackfruit is not fertilized and only watered moderately.

Tip
As a tropical plant, jackfruit grows well in a greenhouse or winter garden, but is unlikely to produce fruit.
