The Medinilla magnifica is a very difficult houseplant to care for. Even small mistakes in care take their toll and lead to diseases such as root rot. But pests also like to attack the Medinille. What diseases do you need to pay attention to?
What diseases and pests can occur with Medinilla Magnifica?
With Medinilla Magnifica, root rot, leaf discoloration or leaf drop due to unfavorable locations are often observed, as well as infestations of mealybugs, mealybugs, scale insects and spider mites. To prevent disease, the plant needs ideal conditions such as warmth, high humidity, and indirect brightness.
Diseases caused by unfavorable locations
The most common disease is root rot. It doesn't just happen when you're too careful about watering. A location that is too cool, too warm or too dry can also cause the Medinilla magnifica to become ill.
In addition, the Medinille becomes sick if it is fertilized too little or too much, is placed in calcareous soil or is watered with calcareous water.
In order to avoid illnesses, you must therefore meet the care requirements precisely.
The right location to avoid diseases
Warmth and high humidity are very important. The Medinilla magnifica also likes it to be very bright without being exposed to direct sunlight.
Good site conditions can be created in greenhouses. In summer you can also take the Medinilla magnifica outside during the day, but only if it has no flowers or buds.
Leaves fall off or turn brown
If the leaves of Medinilla magnifica fall off or turn brown, the plant is in a drafty location or has been moved to a different location. Such relocation measures also result in flower buds and flowers themselves falling off.
Provide a location right from the start where the Medinille is protected from drafts and can remain standing for a longer period of time.
What pests can occur?
The Medinilla magnifica is often plagued by pests. These include:
- mealybugs
- Mealybugs
- Scale insects
- Spider mites
An infestation must be treated immediately before the pests spread too much. Since you cannot simply place the Medinille under the shower to rinse off the pests, you must take standard pest control measures (€6.00 on Amazon). Lacewings or ladybirds can also be used to combat pests in the greenhouse.
Tip
The Medinilla magnifica does not appear to be poisonous. At least no cases of poisoning have been reported so far. You can therefore care for the plant safely if children and pets are part of the family.
