Roseroot is an old medicinal plant that you could not grow yourself until recently. A variety has now been bred that you can also grow in your home garden or even in a container. How to Grow Roseroot.
How to grow rhodiola root successfully?
To grow rhodiola in the garden, choose a sunny location, loosen the clayey, lime-free soil deeply, plant in spring at a distance of 25 cm and water moderately. In the bucket you need a deep pot, compost-gravel substrate and winter frost protection.
The right location for growing rhodiola in the garden
Roseroot prefers a location that is as sunny as possible. However, it also copes quite well with partially shaded locations.
Roseroot is very popular as a ground cover in rock gardens or alpine gardens.
Even as a container plant, place rhodiola root as sunny as possible.
Prepare the soil well
Since rhodiola root develops long taproots, the soil must be deeply loosened and freed from stones and thickenings. The soil should be clayey, very loose and free of lime. If necessary, mix some gravel into the soil.
When is the best time to plant?
Rhodewort is planted in spring when the ground has warmed to around ten degrees.
Don’t plant rhodiola too close together
Roseroot forms clumps that spread well. That's why it is also valued as a ground cover. Don't plant too densely. The planting distance should be 25 cm.
Roseroot is absolutely hardy
Roseroot can tolerate even the lowest temperatures. It can easily survive temperatures down to minus 40 degrees. Winter protection outdoors is therefore unnecessary.
Growing rhodiola in a pot
Growing roseroot in a pot requires a little more effort. First of all, you need a pot that is as deep as possible so that the taproots have enough space. A large drainage hole is necessary to prevent waterlogging from developing.
Mix mature compost (€10.00 on Amazon) with gravel as a substrate. Insert the plant carefully so as not to damage the root.
When caring for the pot, you have to water more often in the summer without causing waterlogging. In winter you should put rhodiola root in a bucket in a protected place or overwinter it in the house frost-free.
Sowing rhodiola root yourself
- Prepare plant trays
- Spread seeds thinly
- do not cover with soil (light germinator!)
- germinate at around 10 degrees
- single later
- don’t plant out until the following spring
The germination time of rhodiola is between two and four weeks.
Tip
Roseroot is native to Europe and North America. It occurs naturally in the Pyrenees, the Alps, North America and the Arctic.
