A raised bed is not only suitable for growing vegetables and cultivating pretty perennials at a comfortable working height - instead, you can simply kill two birds with one stone and create a cozy, cozy corner with the help of a raised bed and suitable plants.
Which plants are suitable for privacy protection in raised beds?
A raised bed is not only used to grow vegetables and perennials, but can also be used as a privacy screen with suitable plants such as tall herbs, perennials with a long flowering period, berry bushes or small fruit trees to create a cozy and cozy corner.
Block the view of strangers with a raised bed
With a raised bed you can also block prying eyes with plants that are too low in the normal bed. No matter how elegant, beautiful or comfortably furnished a seat is, if you don't have a boundary to protect you from view, you won't feel safe.
Which plants are suitable as privacy screens in raised beds?
Tall herbs such as lavender, rosemary, hyssop, sage and oregano can be used to plant the raised bed at the seating area. They not only smell aromatic, but can also be used for seasoning in the kitchen. Perennials with a long flowering period are also suitable, such as the Indian nettle (Monarda) or tall, upright growing grasses such as the garden riding grass or the small zebra reed.
Privacy protection with fruit trees
Fruit trees - berry bushes and small fruit trees - can also be cultivated as privacy screens in raised beds. Suitable species are primarily currants, gooseberries, mayberries and cultivated blueberries. If you want raspberries to grow on the raised bed, you should attach a post (€5.00 on Amazon) to each of the two narrow sides of the bed and pull a few tension wires between them. Tie the long raspberry canes to this. Espalier fruit planted in rows (e.g. ballerina apple trees) are also very suitable.
Use high walls to build raised beds
Wherever a wall is desired or necessary, you can convert it into an easy-care raised bed with a second one placed in front of it. High walls no longer appear too massive, and you also use the heat-storing effect of the stones for the plants. Compact privacy walls made of gabions or wooden sleepers can also be loosened up in this way. The same applies to high, bare walls of residential and outbuildings. You don't always have enough sun for crops there, but many climbing and ornamental plants also thrive in raised beds. Raised beds are particularly suitable for creating additional green areas in sealed yards and on paved areas.
Tip
If perennial plants are to grow on the raised bed, the layers in the bed must be laid out accordingly. Unlike raised vegetable beds, here you first fill in a drainage layer of gravel and then put a garden fleece over it. This is followed by a mixture of topsoil and compost as a substrate.
