What to do if the grass trimmer doesn't start?

If the trimmer does not start, check the fuel, the starting procedure according to the manual and the spark plug. If the engine is flooded: close the choke, pull the starter rope several times and give full throttle. If the spark plug is dirty: clean or replace.

Preparation work – tips for an inspection

Lawn trimmers are usually equipped with a 2-stroke engine. The engine requires a mixture of gasoline and oil as fuel. You can read the exact mixing ratio in the manual. Please check in advance whether there is enough fuel in the correct mixture in the tank.

Read the operating instructions to find out how the startup process works. Please follow these instructions twice. If the grass trimmer still doesn't start, either the engine has flooded or the spark plug is dirty. Read here what to do now.

Engine flooded – this is how it starts again

If you pull the starter rope more than 10 times when trying to start your grass trimmer with the choke open, excess gasoline will accumulate in the combustion chamber. The common saying is that the problem is a 'flooded engine'. This is what you need to do now:

  • Close choke (starter flap)
  • Pull the starter rope 20 to 25 times to create air flow in the engine
  • Set the engine lever to full throttle and pull the starter rope at the same time
  • Release the throttle and pull again

In addition, you can support your efforts by using a jump starter spray (€15.00 at Amazon) before attempting to start.

Spark plug dirty – How to solve the problem

If all starting efforts fail, check the spark plug thoroughly. Loosen the spark plug connector and unscrew the spark plug. Clean all contacts with a dry cloth. Before reinserting the cleaned spark plug, please wait a few minutes to allow any remaining gasoline to evaporate.

If the spark plug head is completely covered in soot, cleaning can no longer achieve anything. In this case, replace the unusable spark plug with a new one.

If the striking grass trimmer cannot be started with a clean or new spark plug, consult the nearest service workshop. There is probably a more serious problem that requires an experienced craftsman.

Tip

Important safety precautions are important when using a grass trimmer correctly. Also wear work gloves and safety glasses when carrying out repair and maintenance work. If your efforts are successful and the engine suddenly starts, no one should be near the rotating string mowing head.
