At some point the children will outgrow the sandbox and it will be empty. It's time to make a decision: should the sandpit be dismantled or used for something else in the future? You could convert it into a flower bed or a pond.

How to repurpose a sandbox?

To repurpose an old sandpit, you can use it as a flower or vegetable bed, pond, herb bed, rock garden or raised bed. The existing sand and the wooden border can be included in the design.

The sandpit as a flower or vegetable bed

If you want to use the sandbox as a flower or vegetable bed, then all you have to do is fill it with soil and compost and mix everything well. The ideal mixture depends on the plants that are to thrive there. Some require more nutrients (compost in this case), others require less. It is also conceivable to transform it into a herb bed, and the sand can even be useful.

The edge of the sandbox can be removed, but it is a practical border for the bed. If you want, you can also garden while sitting. However, make sure that all areas of the new bed are easy to reach, including the middle. Maybe you can create a narrow path.

From sandpit to pond

Within a short time you can transform a simple sandpit into a pond, at least if you use a pre-made pond shape (€109.00 on Amazon). You simply place these in the “old” sand. You can use the wooden border to design the pond environment as you wish. Fill in soil around the pond. There is space for edge planting here.

If you prefer an individually designed pond with a pond liner, then plan a little more time for the conversion. But in this case too, you can make good use of the existing sand and include the border in the design.

The sandpit as a rock garden

The sand from the former sandbox is a good basis for a rock garden, because plants that love dry soil should grow here. You just need to remove the wooden box/border and spread the sand a little. Then design the area with stones. Add accents or build a border out of it. Then plant your new rock garden.

Possible uses for a disused sandbox:

  • small garden pond
  • Herb bed
  • Rock Garden
  • Raised bed
  • Flower or vegetable bed

Tip

Whether you remove the sandpit or the border completely depends not only on the later use, but also on the condition of the wood used.
