What could be nicer than aromatic, fragrant, flowering herbs next to your favorite seat in the garden, fresh on the salad, on the grilled food or decorating the plate as a colorful, edible decoration? Even if you only have a small garden, you can save space with a herb spiral and still cultivate a large selection of your favorite herbs. Such a spiral is cheap and can be set up quickly with little effort.
How do I build my own herb spiral out of plant stones?
To build your own herb spiral out of plant stones, you need plant stones, mortar, gravel, sand, gravel, compost and plant substrate. Build a spiral wall of plant stones on drainage material and fill it with the appropriate substrate layers.
Suitable material
Granite, sandstone or limestone and other natural stones look particularly pretty, but are also very expensive. Instead, you can use cheaper plant stones, which can be jointed just as well to form a stable wall - and when lushly planted with flowering herbs, they create a wonderful eye-catcher in the garden. Instead of plant stones, many other artificial stones such as (roof) tiles, paving stones, field stones, etc. are also suitable. The only important thing is to build the wall stably and safely and to fill the herb spiral with the appropriate substrate.
You need this material
For a herbal spiral you need:
- Planting stones
- Mortar / cement (always mix fresh!)
- Gravel / construction rubble / broken stones (e.g. broken bricks)
- Sand / gravel
- Compost
- Planting substrate
Construction instructions
Ideally, a herb spiral measures around two meters in diameter and is 60 centimeters high. With these dimensions you have plenty of space for herbs, but you can still easily reach them for care and harvesting. The spiral is built from plant stones as follows:
- First limit the area you want for your herb spiral.
- Mark these using a wooden stake, string and stick.
- Remove the top layer of soil to the depth of a spade.
- Fill the hole with drainage material.
- Building rubble, gravel, broken stone residues and gravel are suitable for this.
- Build a spiral wall on this surface.
- This increases towards the middle.
- Grout the stones well.
- Now fill the interior with stone and rubble material so that a flat surface (interrupted by the wall) is created.
- First fill in the excavated material that has been cleaned of plant and root residue.
- Only above are the zone-specific substrate layers with a thickness of 15 to 25 centimeters.
Tip
At the foot of a larger herb spiral, you can line a hollow with pond liner and create a small water basin here. Many moisture-loving herbs can grow near water, such as meadowsweet and valerian.
