Fruit trees are usually propagated through grafting, as this method allows trees to produce fruit most quickly. In addition, certain characteristics, such as vigor, can best be transferred to a specific variety in this way. The different finishing methods are carried out at different times of the year.
When is the right time to graft fruit trees?
The best time for grafting fruit trees depends on the method chosen: grafting takes place in summer, ideally between July and August, while scion grafting is carried out when vegetation is dormant.
Time depends on method chosen
Occulation, for example, a method of refining many types of fruit, is carried out in summer. There are two different times at which you can successfully inoculate the desired type of fruit: You have the highest growth rates between May and June and then again between July and August, although the later date is the better - plants inoculated early still sprout in the same year out, but then freeze back again. The so-called scion grafting, in which the rootstock and scion are connected to each other through copulation, is only possible during dormancy.
Tip
Fruit trees propagated by seeds are often wildlings that can have completely different characteristics than their parent plants. Seedlings, especially of plum species, often have thorns.
