A raised bed can not only be worked on in a way that is gentle on your back, but the special construction also keeps snails and other pests away. Using our simple assembly instructions, even inexperienced do-it-yourselfers can easily design and assemble a raised bed themselves.
How do I build a raised bed?
Building a raised bed is easy: Decide on a material (e.g. wood), get the required elements (posts, side walls, base plate, drive-in sleeves, screws, weed fleece), assemble the box and reinforce it Posts, attach the frame to ground sockets and line the bed with weed fleece.
A wooden raised bed as a kit
Modular raised bed kits in a plug-in system can be put together very easily without any technical expertise. Retailers have a variety of different sizes and expansion elements tailored to the systems. This means that the bed can be perfectly tailored to your individual needs. Particularly practical: trapezoidal constructions that taper towards the bottom, so you can work on the bed very comfortably.
The structure
- First sort all the elements of the bed.
- Lay out the base planks according to the assembly instructions.
- Insert the spacers and anchor the next boards.
- A drinking water-neutral foundation wall studded membrane (€23.00 on Amazon) made of PE is inserted inside to protect against moisture and ventilate the floor.
This is not always included in the kit. Therefore, when purchasing, please inquire whether you need additional accessories.
Build your own raised bed
Various materials are available for edging the bed:
- Wood: Looks very natural and harmonizes wonderfully with the green surroundings.
- Sheet steel: A very sober variant that suits modern gardens.
- Concrete blocks: A brick raised bed is something that lasts forever. However, this bed sometimes looks a little boring and doesn't fit in well with the green area.
We decided on a raised bed made of wood with a fairly uncomplicated structure that even not inexperienced DIYers can do. You need:
Material | Dimensions |
---|---|
4 posts | 70 to 90 centimeters high |
2 side walls | 30 centimeters high, length depends on the desired length of the bed. At least 2 centimeters thick. |
2 side walls | 30 centimeters high, width depending on the desired width of the bed, at least 2 centimeters thick. |
1 base plate | Dimensions correspond to the length and width of the bed. |
4 Ground impact sleeves | Matched to the dimensions of the posts. |
Wood screws | |
Screws for the ground sleeves | |
Tacker with needles | |
Weed fleece or foundation wall studded sheet made of PE | Amount sufficient to cover the entire bed. |
The structure:
- First screw the 4 side walls together to form a box and connect them to the base plate.
- Screw the 4 posts inside the floor.
- Mark the position of the four feet at the desired location and hammer in the ground sockets here.
- Place the frame in the sleeves and screw it tight.
- Attach the weed fleece or film to the side walls with a staple gun.
And now you can fill the substrate into the raised bed.
Tip
If you like to garden on the terrace or balcony, you can also take advantage of the advantages of a raised bed here. Simply mount plant troughs on stable feet with wheels on the bottom. A raised bed is ready and you can easily transport it from one part of the terrace to another. It is not only perfect for vegetables and herbs, but also for sensitive plants that should only be exposed to the blazing sun temporarily.
