Goji berries are now not only valued as a particularly valuable dietary supplement, but also offer a very decorative appearance, especially during the flowering period. After all, varieties with a high fruit set are covered with a large number of purple funnel flowers between June and August.

When does the goji berry bloom and why doesn't it bloom?

The goji berry blossom appears as purple funnel flowers from June to August and forms striking contrasts on the branches of the plant. The reason for the failure to bloom can be that it is too young, the wrong variety or lack of care. Regular pruning promotes flower and fruit formation.

Characteristics of the Goji flower

The flowers of the goji berry, also known as buckthorn, are funnel-shaped and, with their bright purple tone, stand out from the fresh green of the leaves on the branches. The stamens, which are covered with bright yellow pollen, and the green pistil protrude from the center of the flower funnels. The shape of the fruit to be harvested can already be guessed from the green stem base of the flowers during the flowering period.

Reasons for failure to bloom

If there are no flowers or fruits on the branches of the buckthorn, there can be various reasons:

  • Plants that are too young: Goji berries usually bloom from the third year onwards
  • a wrong variety: only selected cultivars offer high yields
  • lack of care: pruning forces the formation of shorter shoots

Regular pruning usually has a positive effect on fruit set, as the plants otherwise invest a lot of energy in the formation of long shoots and their rooting when they come into contact with the ground.

Tip

Goji berries are self-fertile, but planting several specimens can improve pollination performance.
