Many flowering plants like it sunny, but the garden beds are not always in the sun. Plants often have to cope with partial shade. Find out below which perennials feel comfortable in partial shade on your perennial bed.
Which perennials are suitable for a perennial bed in partial shade?
A herbaceous bed in partial shade thrives best with plants such as mountain monkshood, wood anemone, fatman, fragrant violet, fairy flower, garden lily, periwinkle, Japanese toad lily, Caucasus forget-me-not, liverwort, lily grape, foam blossom, silver candle, forest goat's beard, Woodruff, Waldsteinia and Dwarf Hosta.
What does “penumbra” mean?
While the terms sunny and shady are fairly clear, the term “partial shade” can be interpreted differently. Partial shade is not the same as light shade. There is light shadow when, for example, some light shines through the branches of a nearby tree all day long. This means that the perennial does not have full sun, but it does have sunlight every now and then throughout the day. The situation is different with partial shade: partial shade means that the perennial bed only gets sun for part of the day, usually in the morning or evening. The rest of the day it is in the shade. Perennials that are more comfortable in the shade thrive on a partially shaded herbaceous bed.
Perennials that thrive in partial shade
If sun-hungry perennials such as delphiniums are planted in partial shade, the flowering will be rather weak. In the worst case, the perennial will wither and not bloom at all. Therefore, you should definitely consider their location requirements when creating your planting plan. Perennials that can cope with partial shade and shade are:
