Which stones are suitable for a stone bed and how much do they cost?

Gravel, chippings or gravel made from various types of rock such as bas alt, granite, limestone, marble, mine chippings, quartzite, sandstone and slate are suitable for a stone bed. The costs vary depending on the stone and grain size, prices are usually between €0.22 and €0.47 per kilogram.

Not all stones are the same

In general, three different categories of stone can be used for the stone bed:

  • Gravel,
  • gravel
  • or gravel.

How do the three differ? Gravel differs from grit and gravel in that it is rounded, meaning it has no natural edges or corners. This has both a visual effect and a practical effect: you need more gravel than grit or gravel to cover an area. In addition, weeds are more likely to grow between gravel than grit or gravel, as the stones leave more space. Split and gravel are basically the same: they consist of natural, non-rounded rubble or rock. Gravel is usually larger than grit.

The types of rock for the stone bed

Stone beds are often laid out with white gravel or gravel, which looks elegant and shines in the sun. If you prefer something colorful, you can also choose different colored stones or combine different shades. Artificial stones are available in every color imaginable. But natural shades look more harmonious. Common types of rocks and their color tones:

Rock Colors
Bas alt Black
Granite Gray, gray-white mottled, gray-black mottled, red, green-gray
Limestone Orange, cream, yellowish, gray-white, black
Marble White, white-pink, white-gray, white-red
Mine grit Red, brownish
Quartcite Black
Sandstone (e.g. greywacke) Grey, green, yellow, reddish, cream
Slate Violet, gray, terracotta, green, black

Tip

Another alternative is to use crushed glass for your rock garden. Glass grit is slightly transparent and available in many different colors.

How many stones do I need?

How many stones you need for your stone bed obviously depends first and foremost on the size of the stone bed, but also on the grain size of the stones. For a 10sqm stone bed you need:
