With several small and large ponds and a connecting watercourse, you can create a homely atmosphere in the garden - especially if the artificial waters are planted and perhaps also stocked with fish. We have created a list of options for connecting two garden ponds for you.
How can you connect two ponds with a stream?
To connect two garden ponds with a stream, one of the ponds should be higher so that water flows to the other pond and is pumped back with a pump. It is easier to integrate overflows and seals into self-built pond systems than into prefabricated ponds made of plastic shells, which can often leak or become unstable.
Benefits of connecting two ponds
Such a connection between two (or more) ponds has great advantages: Not only does the entire ensemble appear more harmonious as a unit, the stream can also be used as a natural filter for water purification - especially with the right plants. This is particularly important if fish swim in one of the ponds and contaminants must be filtered out and the water enriched with oxygen on a regular basis. A flowing body of water is ideal as a water filter; the installation of barrages and small rapids also creates turbulence, during which the water is richly saturated with fresh oxygen.
Possibilities of connecting ponds
If two garden ponds are to be connected to each other via a stream, one of the two should be at a slightly higher level. The upper pond practically overflows, water passes through the stream, reaches the lower pond and is pumped back up with the help of a pump. If such a gradient does not exist, the bodies of water can of course also be on one level. Then, however, the pump performance (and therefore the power consumption) must be significantly higher.
Prefabricated ponds made of plastic shells
Many garden owners use ready-made plastic bowls for pond construction, which simply need to be inserted into the dug pit and filled. These shells would have to be cut in order to be connected, for example by bending off part of the edge. However, this makes the prefabricated pond unstable and leaky, which is why this option should be avoided. However, you can use prefabricated ponds with an overflow already installed and then use this to connect a stream.
Homemade pond systems
The connection is easier with pond systems you have made yourself, which
- bricked
- or poured with concrete
- and then covered with pond liner
become. In a new building, ponds and streams can be built from the same materials, although this should also be taken into account in subsequent construction. This is not only for aesthetic reasons, but also ensures better sealing.
Tip
Concrete alone is not waterproof and requires an additional, impermeable seal.
