How can I make a concrete bed border myself?
To make a concrete bed border yourself, you can either cast lawn edges from poured concrete or create bed borders from homemade or finished concrete slabs. In both cases, a trench is dug and maintained with gravel, chippings and mortar.

Bed border made of poured concrete
Poured concrete borders are ideal for curved beds with tight curves. As with stone bed borders, you must first dig a trench 25 to 40 centimeters deep.
- Fill half of this with gravel and compact the material well.
- This is followed by fine grit, which is compacted again.
- Attach sturdy formwork (€85.00 on Amazon).
- This will now be filled with terrace concrete.
- Compact concrete, for example by hitting the material with a flat trowel.
- Let it dry for at least three days before removing the boards.
- Fill with topsoil on the lawn and bed side.
Bed border made of prefabricated concrete slabs
You can cast concrete slabs yourself inexpensively, which has the advantage that you receive them in individual dimensions. To do this, simply build a square frame out of slats and sprinkle the shape with fine sand. Pour in concrete, compact it and allow it to dry thoroughly. Alternatively, you can of course use concrete slabs from the hardware store.
Then proceed as follows:
- Dig a trench that should be at least 25 centimeters deeper than the part of the concrete slab that protrudes into the ground.
- Fill with a 10 centimeter thick layer of gravel that is compacted.
- Fill in as much grit and compact it as well.
- Create a ten centimeter thick mortar bed.
- Put the stones in, align them and tap them with the rubber mallet.
- Slope the mortar bed towards the bed and lawn.
- Let it dry thoroughly and fill with topsoil.
Tip
If you lay the lawn edge flat, you can easily drive over it with the wheel of the lawn mower. If the border is to extend a few centimeters above the ground level, we recommend paving the bed border additionally. This protects the mowing blades and noticeably reduces the maintenance effort.
