Concrete is a versatile material that can even be used to make flower pots. In fact, concrete pots are very trendy because they are almost indestructible. Frost can't harm them and with a little imagination they can be turned into great unique pieces.
How can I make a concrete flower pot myself?
To make a concrete flower pot yourself, you need ready-made concrete, water, two different sized molds, work gloves and sandpaper. Mix the concrete, pour it into the oiled mold and press the inner mold into it. After hardening, sand the surface and decorate the pot as you wish.
Checklist for concrete work
Before you can start working on the flower pot, all the necessary utensils must first be provided:
- a bag of ready-made concrete (€14.00 on Amazon), which only needs to be mixed with water
- Bucket for mixing
- Watering can with water
- Stirring ladle
- two different sized shapes that fit into each other
- possibly acrylic paint to color the concrete (must be cement-proof!)
- Work gloves
- Sandpaper & sander
Watering flower pot
Once all preparations have been made, the actual work can begin.
- Oil the molds you are using so that the concrete block comes off easier afterwards.
- Mix the concrete mix according to the package instructions.
- Pour about a quarter of the mixture into the large mold.
- Distribute the concrete well.
- Place the second form in the first and press it slightly into the soft concrete.
- Fill the inner mold with sand. This means that the soft concrete cannot dent the form.
- Fill the remaining concrete around the second mold.
- After the curing time, you can carefully remove the molds.
finish the pot
It is possible that the raw shape of the flower pot is not completely flat. Help with sandpaper or a sander.
If the surface is satisfactory, the flower pot can be embellished with acrylic painting. It is also possible to make colorful concrete pots instantly. To do this, add cement-safe paints to the mixed concrete.
Advantages of a concrete flower pot
First of all, concrete flower pots are extremely inexpensive if you make them yourself. All that is required is a little bit of craftsmanship and a little time.
Another advantage is the absolute frost resistance of the concrete pot. So that the pot no longer absorbs water, plastics in liquid form can be mixed in when mixing the concrete. Get advice from your hardware store. However, the disadvantage is the heavy weight of the concrete pots. Small specimens can still be easily transported, but large plant pots are no longer so easy to move without a hand truck. However, the concrete pots are also very stable due to their weight.
