Not every garden has enough space for a powerful climbing plant that grows meters high, but you don't have to go without wisteria straight away. You can train it as a standard tree or purchase it commercially as a stem.
How do you cut a wisteria on trunk?
To cut a wisteria on the trunk, shorten the main shoot by a third in the 1st year and cut off side shoots. In the 2nd year, shorten the main shoot to the desired height and side shoots to 3-5 eyes. From the 3rd year onwards, consistently cut off all side shoots below the crown and shorten them to 3-5 eyes.
The right cut in the first year
You need a young, strong plant if you want to grow a wisteria as a standard tree. Choose the strongest shoot as the main shoot, shorten it by about a third and support the shoot with a stick (€9.00 at Amazon). This should become a strong trunk later on. You can cut off all other shoots.
Education in the second year
In the second year you can decide how big your wisteria should be and shorten the main shoot accordingly. The side shoots now remain at a length of three to five eyes.
The final cut in the third year
Now it's time for your wisteria to get its final form. Below the desired crown, consistently cut off all side shoots close to the trunk. Within the crown, shorten the shoots again to around three to five eyes.
The maintenance cut from the fourth year
From around the fourth year onwards, cut your tall wisteria in the same way as one that grows on a pergola or other climbing aid. In spring, thin out the plant so that it has plenty of strength to produce new buds. In late summer or autumn, shorten the flowering shoots. This way you ensure a rich abundance of flowers.
