To cut a thuja into a ball, carry out three prunings per year: mid-April, late June and late August. Use a wire or cardboard template to create the perfect ball shape and never cut behind the green unless infested with pests.
Cut thuja into a ball
Apart from the cone shape, the most popular shape for cutting thuja is the spherical shape. For this, you should choose a Thuja variety that does not grow so quickly.
In the first two years, let the tree of life grow without cutting it into shape. Then the roots develop better and the tree generally becomes stronger.
Cut the tree of life three times a year
While you initially have to cut a hedge twice a year and later only once a year, topiary requires up to three prunings:
- 1. Cut mid-April
- 2. Cut at the end of June
- 3. Cut at the end of August
In April you do the main pruning. The thuja is shortened significantly so that it takes the shape of a ball. Remove shoots that grow sideways as they hinder air circulation. This can prevent early balding and prevent fungal infestation.
Never cut an arborvitae behind the greenery unless there are branches infected by fungi or pests. It takes a very long time until such areas are green again.

After each new growth, branches emerge that protrude from the ball. Simply cut this to the desired length.
How to cut a ball
To get a truly round ball, make a template out of wire or cardboard. Simply put a wire mesh over the crown of the thuja. Then you can cut off any protruding branches.
If using a template, run it around the crown and cut along it.
Do not cut on sunny days or when it rains
Never prune the tree of life - whether as a hedge or as a ball - in strong sunshine or when the tree is very wet.
The interfaces then turn an unpleasant brown color.
Tip
Thuja can also be cut into a spiral. You can get stencils for this commercially. A ball is often cut as the tip.
