The easy-care and hardy gorse is almost the ideal garden plant because it requires little work but blooms beautifully. If you like, you can also cultivate it in a pot or bucket and use it to beautify your terrace or balcony.
How do I plant and care for gorse in a pot?
To cultivate gorse in a pot, you need a sufficiently deep planter, a drainage layer, lean substrate and a sunny location. The potted plant should be watered regularly, fertilized sparingly and protected from frost in winter.
Buy broom in a pot
You can buy broom bare root or in a pot or container. If you have the choice, go for the container or potted plant. The root ball of these plants is well protected and remains so until planting.
Planting gorse in a pot
Be sure to look for a sufficiently deep container or a high flower pot in which the taproot of the broom has enough space. A hole in the ground is important so that excess irrigation water can drain away directly and avoid waterlogging. Cover it with an old pottery shard or a few stones (€8.00 on Amazon) so that it cannot be clogged by potting soil that washes out.
Fill the planter about a third full with lean soil or a mixture of potting soil and sand and place your broom in it, then fill with your chosen substrate. Press it down carefully and water the gorse a little.
The most important things in brief:
- choose a sufficiently deep planter
- Create drainage layer
- choose a sunny location
- Wind is well tolerated
How do I care for broom in a pot?
As a potted plant, the gorse needs a little more care than in the open field. The gorse should be watered every now and then because it can hardly get the water from the depths in the pot. A little fertilizer is also useful. However, too much of it damages the flower.
It is important for potted plants to overwinter properly. The root ball must not freeze completely, otherwise the gorse will die. Therefore, cover the bucket with protective material, for example an old blanket, jute sacks or similar. The bale must also not dry out.
Tip
Although it is more commonly known as a garden plant, you can also grow your gorse in a pot.
