Most of the approximately 70 species of banana plants come from tropical or subtropical areas and therefore prefer warm temperatures. They are mostly traded as houseplants. In addition to the real bananas (bot. Musa), there are various decorative bananas.

What temperature does a banana plant need?

The ideal temperature for banana plants is around 20°C, with 15°C being the minimum in summer. They prefer a bright location without direct midday sun, protected from drafts and wind. In winter, the winter quarters should be frost-free, with a humidity of at least 50%.

The right temperature in summer

Basically the temperature should be around 20 °C. 15°C is the minimum during the summer months. Of course, the suitable temperature also depends on the variety of banana tree you have. Tropical plants like it a little warmer all year round, while others are content with a slightly cooler environment. If your banana plant feels comfortable, then it is less susceptible to diseases or pests.

Can my banana plant go outside?

Your banana plant can spend the summer outside in the garden or on the balcony, provided it is warm enough there. A cold, wet, typical North German summer is not particularly well tolerated by many banana varieties. After the Ice Saints in May, slowly acclimate your banana plant to fresh air and sunlight.

To start with, it is enough to place the plant in a partially shaded and wind-protected place for a few hours. Later she can stay outside overnight. In autumn, remember to bring your banana plant back into the apartment/house before the first night frosts come. Otherwise she'll quickly lose her leaves.

The ideal temperature in winter

You can overwinter a tropical banana tree in your living room; it is used to constant warmth. Other species prefer cooler winter quarters where they can recover from their rather rapid growth. As a rule, the winter quarters should be frost-free; only winter-hardy varieties can tolerate temperatures down to -10 °C.

The most important things in brief:

  • ideal temperature: approx. 20 °C
  • Minimum temperature: 15 °C
  • bright location, but no blazing summer/midday sun
  • protect from drafts and strong wind
  • ideal humidity: at least 50%

Tip

A summer on the balcony or in the garden makes your banana plant more resilient and contributes to its well-being.
