Loquats have special location requirements. The shrub can only develop vigorously if soil conditions, lighting conditions and temperatures are right.
What location conditions does a loquat require?
For an optimal location for the loquat, bright conditions, a sunny location, protection from wind and a nutrient-rich, permeable and moderately dry substrate are important. The plant is hardy down to -5°C and prefers mild temperatures.
Soil and light
A location in a sunny location where the loquat is protected from wind by walls or hedges is ideal. She likes bright conditions. In shady locations, the shrub's growth potential is limited. The medlar is undemanding when it comes to the pH value of the substrate. It grows on acidic and alkaline soils.
This is how the substrate should be:
- nutrient-rich
- permeable
- moderately dry
Optimum temperatures
The evergreen shrub is adapted to areas with mild winter temperatures. The roots are sensitive to frost. Loquats are hardy down to temperatures of -5° Celsius. Wine-growing regions provide the optimal conditions for planting the bushes outdoors. In regions with frosty winter months, you should provide your plant with winter protection (€10.00 on Amazon). If the plants are growing in a pot, you can change location in winter.
