Bougainvillea is not considered an easy plant to cultivate - at least in this country. In order to accommodate the colorful climbing beauty, the right location is a crucial factor. Read below what you need to consider.
Where should a bougainvillea be placed?
The ideal location for a bougainvillea is warm and sunny, in a south-facing spot with all-day sunlight. In summer, the plant benefits from heat-storing stone walls on which it can climb.
It has to be warm and sunny
Since bougainvillea comes from the Andean region between Ecuador and Brazil, a lot of sun and warmth is a must for it. It is therefore best to give it a south-facing location where the sun can shine unhindered at any time of the day. This can be on a large living room window or, ideally, in the winter garden and outside on the terrace in summer.
So the best bougainvillea location is:
- as warm and sunny as possible
- South facing
- supplied with sunlight all day
On stone walls in summer
If you put your bougainvillea outside in summer, it is recommended to let it climb up a heat-retaining house or terrace wall. This means that it can still enjoy the radiant heat even after the sun sets - it also makes a wonderful wall decoration.
